Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai`i Tara Boone knew at the age of eight that she would live in New York City, go to Parson’s School of Design, work for Donna Karan, and own her own fashion design company. She was right. As the daughter of a well known architect, creativity flourished in the Boone household. While her brothers were assembling model airplanes, she discovered a sewing machine and her mother’s brand new- very expensive, still in the wrapper – polka dotted and floral sheet in the linen closet. Dragging them into her room, she cut it up and created a tank top and mini skirt. (She was grounded for weeks for cutting up her mother’s best sheet!) A $2.50 allowance (she was eight) to buy fabric allowed her to pursue her love of fashion and designing. Sketching, draping, cutting, sewing- making new outfits for school became the norm.
After her studies at The University of Rhode Island, American College in London and Parsons School of Design, and many years of working for various designers, photographers and fashion companies, Tara opened up her own namesake design firm in New York City. Within months of opening her company, her products were on the pages of People Magazine, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Lucky, The New York Times Style Section, The Star Bulletin, The Post, Daily Candy, MidWeek, and on TV Shows like The Today Show, Extra, The View, KHON Channel 2 Morning Talk show. And found on the arms of such Hollywood celebrities as Kerry Washington, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Teri Hatcher, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Garner, Katie Holmes, and Molly Sims to name just a few. Tara Boone designs have sold in more than 600 high end specialty stores across the United States, London, Japan, Taiwan, Puerto Rico, Canada including Henri Bendel, Bloomingdales, Macys, House of Frasier, Takashimaya, Fred Segal and many other online retailers and media giants like QVC. Tara also designed product packaging for John Paul Mitchell Systems which featured her on the boxes that were sold in over 90,000 salons across the United States.
Tara fulfilled her childhood dream to become a New York City fashion designer and in 2008 and 2009 she fulfilled another dream- to travel around the world. Travel and fashion… the perfect pair.
She traveled around the world with just a backpack exploring other countries and cultures, meeting new friends and visiting old ones along the way. Starting in Fiji and working her way west around the Globe, Tara zig-zagged through time zones and traditions- chasing summer. Her adventures included working at an orphanage in Cambodia; climbing to Base Camp Mount Everest, hiking Grey Glaciers in Patagonia, Machu Picchu in Peru, and Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand; skydiving; bungee jumping 440 feet; attending ashrams along the Ganges in India; meeting the Masai tribes in Kenya; exploring Cappadocia in Turkey; visiting temples in Laos; safaring in the Serengeti in Tanzania; sleeping under the stars on the Sahara Desert in Morocco; Spanish lessons in Barcelona; sailing in the Mediterranean; watching the Bolshoi Ballet perform Swan Lake in Red Square, Moscow and countless more incredible adventures.
Since returning home to Hawai`i, she has helped young designers and small businesses with Fashion Business and Marketing including design direction, branding, social media, web design, logo design, business logistics, marketing materials and public relations/press.
